Did you know that when we get upset; bothered, frustrated, angry, afraid, insecure, there is a place to go to; right inside ourselves. There is a safe haven where mind is free and clear and resiliency readily accessible. Children know this instinctively since they have less thinking to hang onto than do we adults. Children let go of negativity so easily, that they bounce back quickly. They can go from an unhappy, unhealthy moment to a contented, healthy next moment. We have that same flexibility when we let go of thoughts that hold us down and don’t serve us. We can return to innocence, as we were before our minds were contaminated with the kind of thoughts we learned to think; the conditioned, programmed thinking that disturbs us if we don’t recognize it for what it is – simply thought, (ideas that we come up with) not reality, although it may appear to be reality; it is nothing more than the thinking we tend toward when we’re out of sorts. When we realize this, our bad feelings may alarm us but we can use the alarm signal as a call to wake up, back off and clear the mind. No need to continue to think upsetting thoughts. It is far wiser to let go. We can always come back but with a calmer mind, “and then you won’t feel so bad.” It will not look as insurmountable and you will see more clearly how to navigate through whatever it is. Just think of how lucky we are! Not only can we wait for a better thought to arise once we get calm, we also possess a built-in alarm system to warn us when to stop pressuring ourselves. The feelings we get from bad or negative thoughts are actually the natural, internal signal that something is amiss in our system. When an unhealthy thought surfaces, we can quit relying on our thoughts, take a step back and quiet down in order to access wisdom. If you work in a firehouse, when the alarm goes off the firefighters hurry off to put out the flames. When we hear our internal alarm, we know we are having a fiery thought but all we have to do is ignore it, and refuse to feed the flame and it will extinguish itself. No thought will last forever, the ones we ignore flow through us with no ill effect. It’s automatic because we were designed that way; thoughts come and go. All we have to do is to make space for a new, better thought to emerge from wisdom. Wisdom filters into our consciousness when we get calm and clear the mind.
